IME most damp issues are caused by condensation / lack of heating
Our biomass boiler proved this - in our front room the wallpaper was falling off, turn the heat up & problem solved

We also found that digging up old tiles and soil in the lounge and replacing with concrete / DPM helped !

We have used plasterboard with cellotex on the back and it is very good

keeping heat on 24/7 at a sensible temp IE 19 degrees is far better than a hot cold regime and much cheaper in oil, my old man would set the heating in our old house for a couple of hours twice a day, when I took over I left it on lower but all day and night, never had a problem with damp after that and used less oil

Mrs Static is more concerned about damp coming up through the ground and into the room. I maintain that, as water tends not to be very keen on soaking through this land, it wont be keen on going up either. Could easily line a reservoir with this clay.

Do you leave the tractor running all day rather than running it cold each time you need it?
Do you leave the oven on 24/7 so that it's ready to cook the tea? No, of course not as it loses heat - simples.

If you read that, which I have just done it says that if you let a house cool right down you create condensation which causes more heat loss so higher bills. When I did physics at school we had to produce a graph showing how much energy it takes to heat water for each degree higher, it goes up by a few joules for each degree extra so letting a heating system cool down and then raise it up to heat a house uses more in total, this discussion was about damp and how to stop it, after living in a damp old house as a child with a tight father who complained about wallpaper falling off due to damp I never had a problem when keeping it on 24/7,

We used insulated plasterboard dabbed on a single skin brick wall. I was sceptical but it was cheap and the condensation problems have disappeared and the room is now nice and warm as my office.....

Can't disagree with the damp issue, but you said is uses less oil - I disagree, sorry. :)
i fully agree with the statement i have an old stone pace.insulated as far i can go.low steady heating is cheaper than on off, brand new worcester gas condensing boiler, try heating both ways and low and steady on all time is cheaper, plus house feels better, set thermostat to desired level, leave on and forget

Well, MSE doesn't agree with you, but everyone is entitled to their opinion. :)
