International 454 down on power

Hi TFF,

I'm looking for some advice on my IH 454. I think that it's down on power. I used the tractor for some topping and it was struggling with the work of the topper - it's only a 5 ft flail topper. I had my local mechanic out to have a look, and he could not see anything really wrong with it, so we left it as was. Yesterday I used the tractor to do some tedding with a PZ Haybob, and it was struggling with that too - It's always been fine with the tedder before. When it's struggling it chucks out loads of black smoke and the engine speed drops, so I assume Fuel is OK. It seems to run a little rough at higher engine speeds but not lots. I'll see if i can post a video to YouTube so show what it's doing tonight too.

I know there is not a lot to go on but, any Ideas on what might be wrong?

PS anyone recommend a good mechanic in East Yorks?

Thanks

Richard

Where exactly are you?
I could possibly come and have a look for you.

Check air filter and intake piping.

Change fuel filter, it's cheap and easy to eliminate.

Check exhaust isn't blocked or restricted.

It's possible the head gasket is failed between cylinders.

Valve clearances are always worth checking.

black smoke is not short of fuel, it's short of air,
check air filter and all pipework to engine, check rubber pipes for breaking up on inside as well,
it's got to be an air problem, or the lack of it,

is the stopper cable to the pump going fully back to run position, and not just to start position, as this gives excess fuel

Thanks for the suggestions, Air filter is OK, but I've not checked the pipe work to the engine, so I'll take a look at that tonight. Stop cable looks to be operating correctly I'll check the stop screw has not moved on the pump. When I checked the air filter yesterday I noticed the dirt unloader was full of dust / dirt so I emptied it, but no improvement.

@TripleSix I'm near (south of) Pocklington if that's not too far away.

fit a new air filter, old one might look ok. But could be still blocked
