Looking at buying an ih 574 to cosmetically tidy and use as a second tractor on the hay this summer if it comes..... mainly for a 4 rotor Tedder single rotor rake and maybe on the small baler.

It’s a hydro so not a clue on what I’m looking at really, I’ve been told it’s not got a t/a which is a start....

Front crank seal has also been done with the clutch and pressure plate.

What should I be checking on viewing it?

The hydro is ideal for a small amount of hay duties although it will be hot and noisy! Don't buy with out testing. Ideally run the machine up to working temperature then check the transmission is still functioning well. The hydro will not pull as well as the equivalent manual.

What sort of time would you say it would take to reach operating temperature?

I assume there’s a clutch like a standard manual box machine? Or is it a dump pedal for the hydraulics?

The pedal is just a dump pedal but could be used for inching to hitch up. Ideally the tractor needs to be loaded up with some work to test it. The hydro will not pull as well as manual. Set the engine at a reasonable working speed and move off using the speed control lever with small smooth movements. With a light load on the transmission you can push the lever forward and cut the revs. The real beauty is on light PTO duties. Set your engine speed for the PTO then control the ground speed to suit. If pulling hard then use low range rather than just pulling back the speed lever. This will avoid overloading/heating up the transmission.

574 hydro never had a clutch or pressure plate, just a plane plate to drive the gearbox, the weakness is the oil seal on the input shaft on the gearbox any leak here means a new seal but they never seem to last long

Brilliant tractors in their time, I had 3 of them in the 1980s. Ideal on a hedge cutter or a baler which were my main jobs in that era. The newest one would be 35 years old now and the hydro units were a very complicated unit to fix, I would imagine that most of IH hydro engineers have long since retired or passed away. Buy a geared 574 by all means, relatively simple tractors, but steer clear of hydros, they're too old now
