I am look for help / information for a customer who is looking to install some kind of power assisted steering to his B414. I have found out that he may require a tandem gear pump but we are struggling to find a supplier of any other items.

I used to work at main IH dealer from 1976-80 and I saw a lot of B414's but only one with power steering so quite rare now, yes he will need a tandem pump .. after the IH dealer I went to a firm that made farm buildings and there was a fork lift that was made on a B414 skid unit with power steering, but finding parts that are not worn out could be difficult.... what is the problem with the steering on your customers tractor? if everything is in good condition with the tyre pressure correct and stub axles greased the steering should be ok.. does it have loader?

There is no problem I can see with the current steering. The tractor is looked after and used to assist with jobs around a small piece of land which includes a horse and veg patch
The main issue is the age of the owner who struggles steering the tractor, not the tractor.

No idea @essexpete spent to much time talking and drinking tea to notice the tyres but will find out. Personally I think with out being disrespectful the age and health of the owner is the biggest problem. So the best cure is to add some kind of power steering to the tractor.

I live in Canada and before I bought my B414 I read up on them in local forums. Mine is early '60s model and they were noted to have bad steering. But since most were standard steering I thought how bad can it be. Well, I am here to tell you if I were to drive it on any type of regular basis I would have muscles like Bullwinkle, even more than when I retired from the railroad after 16 years of hand throwing switches on 115 pound rail. I am not new to tractors. Have owned Oliver, Cockshutt ,Ford 2000, David Brown 880, and cut and baled mine and a neighbors hay with a Belarus. About 3000 bales. But this thing is beyond ridiculous. No amount of grease, oil or tweaking has improved it. It will work for awhile and then suddenly lock up in a turn, and the only way to maneuver is backing up, going forward short distances until it releases. Then you might be good for an hour, a day or the next turn in opposite direction or the same one. So there is a good chance it is the tractor.

I have never seen the optional power steering for the B series - other than on the internet.View attachment 1118_001.pdf

This is more than scarce - as is the extra spool valve slices and levers to fit onto the side of the hydraulic tank.

I did see a slice once on ebay and it made a hell of a lot of money. You don't see any of this optional stuff on scrappers either and i have seen a few.

I saw them at Ontario Canada a few years ago when I first got my b414 but don't remember price now a few years later. Wonder what shipping to you would cost. Could check it out if you like or see if they have email.

Your manual steering box can be rebuilt with new bearings - and complete steering box replacements are available from the UK from many different companies.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
