Introduce Yourself

Introducing myself.
Originally from south wales where i had farmed from the age of seven, helping out on local farms when not in school. I went to agricutural college at 16 for two years, worked on various dairy, beef, sheep, arable farms for two years, started up a fencing company with a good friend for two years then went full time with machinery contractors for a about five years, covering just about everything agri and plant then left the industry to join the railways. I still mucked in on some machinery jobs during weekends when available until the late 90's.
I have always missed the agriculural industry since leaving it. Been a regular visitor to all sorts of agri/country/vintage shows nationwide where i am an old skool tractor junkie. Big up the classic fords & counties. My heart has and always will be, in the industry.
I have been living in London since 2002 which is now my home but i still return to south wales once a month to see family, deal with some personal business issues and catch up with some old farming friends and clients. I'm still working on the railways which i have been doing 30 years this year. I have been trying to find some farming weekend work for a number of years in the london home counties, ideally with machinery but to no avail. Still open to any offers as i badly need to get my hands seriously dirty again.
My main reason for joining this forum was to seek some part time machinery work and also to find some ratting premises in london and the home counties. Not afraid of doing other physical work including general farm work and dairy. I'm living in SE london so anywhere in kent and essex would be ideal. Other counties considered depending on distance and digs.
Farming was the best part of my life. Loved to get back into it some way. I am older now, still strong and healthy but fatter.
As for the ratting, i have formed the London and South East Rat Pack, where i have made contact with several others with terriers and lurchers to attend farms, stables and anything else that has a rat problem. All free of charge, just a fun and practical day out for us. I will be posting further details in other categories.
Thankyou.

Hi All,
Long time fan of the forum, Introducing myself... I'm involved in agriculture and waste management (the technically competent person on a number of sites, AD & Composting) and offer compliance and health & safety consultancy services (which I had never planned to do but kept getting asked to do stuff lol),
I'm not a health and safety nerd by any means but I am a real believer in the role health and safety has to play in agriculture and one of my main focus points is to remove the misconceptions that many farmers have about health and safety, I'm only really getting started with my Agri H&S plans but if you want to look at www.practicalfarmsafety.co.uk I will have more material within the coming weeks.
Looking forward to getting stuck into the forum!

Hi guys - Very much a newbie to both the forum and the world of farming. My partner and I have recently inherited 14 acres across three fields, and will be hoping to tap into the knowledge on this forum to get us through the first few months. On that note, is there any thread you'd recommend we get stuck into as a bit of an intro? Think we'll be putting some horses into one of the fields, and then just general maintenance of the fields and hedges. Debating a quad or compact tractor for that work!

Hi there! Ooh, let's see ... Livestock forum might cover much of what you need?

Have a saunter over. There might be a thread you can relate to, or perhaps you could start one yourself :)

Mixed Farmer
Hi, my name is Jimmy and never thought I will be joining and writing on a farming forum, although I always told my dad that I love nature and farm life, but never lived on one neither inherited it from anywhere. I am 36, and until recently I have been working in real estate capital funds and finance, after qualifying as a chartered accountant 12 years ago. Short while ago, I came across a piece of land in Kent, which is a relatively a small plot with previous licensee running a Christmas trees business. Due to Brexit, the employer I was working for changed direction of his billion pounds investment management business, and left me to find my self to try do same elsewhere or do something new. Being a bit entrepreneurial and also that find industry was changing shape, I started looking into running a chartered accountancy practice and attempt an online e-commerce stint, just before the Covid arrived. With covid, we went back indoors, and while trying bit of luck with e-commerce, I suddenly received a news that licensee is leaving and if I wish to own the trees and sell them! Never expected that but somehow he has thankfully left trees for me to look after and realise some gain from, as already was struggling with generating steady income, here come an opportunity that I can entertain with my 2 years and one year olds..

The rest is yet to be known with what will happen between me and getting to farming Christmas trees. The land is about 3 acre plot in Kent, partly woodland so about 2 acres used for tree farming. The possibility of relocating to Scotland, if it works, is suddenly on the table to explore the horizons!

The name's Sam from Ireland living in Scotland with my partner who has sheep (cause what else would you have in Scotland?) all jokes aside, I started a blog www.oinksandbots.com that started off as a sort of therapy for me (very much a city lad) but has now been evolving over the last few weeks into a sort of resource for farmers.

I've noticed a lot of gaps in communication between farmers and the general public and I am looking to see if I can address that in some small way. With climate change and increasing populations, food security is something that I felt a lot of people have overlooked cause when you go into your local Sainsburys and you see the shelves all stacked, it's hard to imagine all that being gone!

So feel free to say hi and if you have concerns about your business or whatever, let me know and let's see what I can dig up!

Welcome to the TFF madness!

You are dead right about the disconnect between farmers and the rest of society around food production. Thank you for trying to help.
