Should say Hello I guess. Live in North Wales. No Farming connections but interested in all things country and Machinery. Did Agri Engineering after school then went off driving trucks. Now I'm in the automotive parts business.

Some cracking reading on here and never a dull moment either.

Could you possibly fashion a corer out out a piece of 3" pipe, a handle off it with foot pegs to put some weight on it. Take out core, pop tattie down pop core back in.
The cardboard looks an interesting idea.
Thanks. Worth a try. It will be interesting experimenting. That sound like a DIY bulb planter .

Why bury the potato? Sit it on the top and pile compost/soil over the top of it, and keep piling it on as the shoot spears through, until you've gone high enough.
Alternatively, do the samein a barrel of compost, and spread the compost once you've harvestedthe potatoes.
Well I suppose that's really what we do when we "Earth up". One book I read suggested this but covering with layers of newspaper. Unfortunately I don't read news papwers and some of the inks are supposed to be not to healthy. Also the writer admitted the tubers were smaller than those grown directly into the soil I think I will use my adze to make a small trench to start them off. I can pull an adze but not dig with a spade due to hip tendons damaged. So this year will be very trial and error. I always do first earlies in potato/rubble bags but main crop is too many for this.
Back to the adze..... another very successful experiment. I thought outside the box. Looked at pre victorian gardening...This is where agricultural Archaeology becomes practical!!! I saw in pictures The ADZE!!! If it was good enough to be used for thousands of years it would be good enough for me!

Geoff Hamilton wrote a book about running a garden on just a couple of hours a week, if you can still get hold of it. It would have many handy time and labour saving tips in it.
