Is straw shortage over-egged?

I work as a festival manager, every year I use approximately 1200 small bales on various festival sites around the country. Should I be making alternative plans for next year?

In your line of work, I should think a few pence a bale to secure supply wouldn't be a problem? How about contracting a couple of strategically located to supply you every year?

I could deliver but you would need to unload and I dont want them back , would also need to be a minimum of 4oo bale drops, so better for you to use a local man who can cater fully for your needs , you will get them as long as your willing to pay a good price

That is about what we paid last year, plus a flatrate of £40 for delivery. Works out about 300-400 bales per festival site and you get them back at the end.
Are they worth having back ? Where are the festivals at what dates, we might be able to do you a deal, this year might be tricky unless harvest time as most of ours are spoken for but year after should be ok

It all depends how harsh this winter is.......and what sort of harvest we have next year.......and how harsh the following winter is........

Sold mine easily in 2012.....couldn't give it away in 2013 / 2014......sold easily in 2015 /16....

I don’t like taking back small bales, mainly because I would need to sell them on afterwards and I never know what might be contained within them by way of contamination after been hired out.
Maybe not so bad if you use the straw yourself, but even then I would prefer to sell them and not hire out bales.

True, can't guarantee whats been in them but you get paid more than the value of the bale so if you can sell them you are basically doubling your money

I think there will always be a shortage of small bales, my neighbour does a few 1000 a year, he supply's a local music festival, he always moans about, extra work and manpower required to bale and shift them.

Don't forget that straw isn't the only thing you can use for event seating, I've supplied poor quality hay to people for seating at events, it makes no odds to them if its not up to scratch for horses, you can sit on it just the same. Same sort of price, £3/bale, its a good outlet for bales that you can't get rid of as animal fodder. And there's rarely a lack of supply of poorish quality hay..........:whistle:
