I got our local fencing supply man to cut me up a couple of 8" square gateposts on his bandsaw. I have about 8 blocks of varying sizes from 8" up to 18" long and, importantly, all of them have nice square ends so they are flat and level as the concrete floor underneath them. A pair of 16t axle stands from Spaldings was a very handy few quid spent too.
There is nothing wrong with wooden blocks per se, but they should be cut square and laid flat. If one of those was to split then it would be game over.
