iSeed

I'm thinking of overseeding some fields with a white clover mix, does anyone have any experience of using iSeed fertiliser seed dressings from Yara. Its going onto a very open spring reseed on field thats got some really heavy areas in so I was thinking the iseed might get better germination rates where there is more clay on the surface.

When I had a quote last time, a couple of years back, it was quite expensive. I could have put nearly twice the amount of seed on for the same money!!! In tests, I know that you get better growth from the iSeed, but has anyone done a test comparing an iSeeded reseed with one using twice as much, but untreated, seed?

Thats the conundrum, the price per KG is the same for treated seed as for untreated, I am not sure what % of the dressed seed weight is seed and fertiliser.

iSeed 50 isn't going to warm your cold clay areas up. If you are happy with the nutrients in the soil and N,P & K are okay I'd look towards using the standard overseeding mixtures with the Gromax treatment. Gromax is added at no extra cost.

Edit: Perhaps bump your seed rate up to 12kg/acre?

I'm only putting on Clover, its being added to a particularly weedy reseed, Spay contractor is spraying it now as I type so it wont be going on for another 6 weeks. Is Growmax available on a white Clover Mix and do you know how much it increases the seed weight by?

50% weight increase if you use iSeed 50, Gromax no weight increase.

I got the wrong end of the stick when you said you were hoping to use a clover mix, I had it in my mind grass/clover overseed.

I will check but I'm pretty certain both treatments are not available on anything but the standard overseeding mixtures (assuming we are talking about the same supplier).

The iSeed 50 treatment is added in Denmark and is limited to the standard overseeding mixtures.

Im also thinking of introducing clover into leys using an einbock and stocks seeder, whens the best time to do this and what results can i expect. was thinking of using a pelleted seed similar to fert prills for easier flow. something like this.

How much does it cost for the seed roughly and what kg per acre would you need?

Its about £7 a kg. The recommended rate is 2kg per acre for over seeding.

Just spoke to the supplier and this is what they say. Firstly, yes you can have the white clover blends treated with iSeed 50. The way it works is for every 1 kg of clover you would add 500gms of iSeed 50. So to sow 2kg of clover per acre you would need a total seed rate of 3kg/acre. Retail for 50kg plus close to £6/kg delivered.

This I would say is the best way to overseed clover seed and now would be a good time to do it as clover loves warm ground.

Don't forget if your soil fertility is wrong clover will do very poorly so check that first.

Clover prefers to be sown at a shallower depth than a diploid perennial ryegrass, I'd say a fairly aggressive tine angle because as you say the ground is hard and yes roll in nice and tight.
