Are these old things any good for light use as a yard machine? I've heard they struggle for traction. Is there anything else to worry about on them?

Not ime there wasnt but we didnt have one for very long.

They are ok to a point.
They turn sharp.
Not too bad grip on the flat and with a load on.
Handling bags etc around a flat hard yard is fine.

Forward reverse can get a bit hesitant
If it's a perkins 236 non turbo it's pretty bomb proof I would say for none too intense use.

I saw one on demo in the late 70s. It was used in an attempt to muck out a cattle yard. Useless.
It also would not go up the field that was a little soft any better than an old Sambron 2wd mast forklift. OK loading grain on the concrete.

Our yard has got a few sloping gravel tracks, would they struggle? Do they have a diff lock? Could you ballast the front tires?
Surely something like a 526s would be a far better all rounder for a bit more outlay?

I had a 520-4 4wd for 33 years. I can see how a two wheel drive would have severe limitations when you get off of the yard. These machines had no diff lock. In certain conditions it was easy to spin the front offside wheel. I was advised to ballast that wheel to offset the weight of the cab, which helped. Get a 4wd one.
