JCB 535-95 doesn't fully retract.

When I pull the boom back the outer one comes completely in and then they both stop but there is still 6 inches more travel for the big ram to pull in. It looks like it pulls in a couple of mm less each time as you can see where it last came back to by the oil seal mark on the ram.

Have you fully extended it for a few seconds? Open the back door before you do and check the hoses are OK. Then pull it back in.

If that doesn't do it, there is a male QR coupler at the rod end of the ram, should be able to see it from the seat. I think they put a jumper hose from the auxilliaries to here and pressurise to sync the system in the workshop - but could well be wrong on this.

There is a 6ft length of oil pipe with a male qr at either end, under the seat, Didn't know what it was for . It would fit the female on the ram, but wouldn't reach to the back spool. Is there any where else it could plug in too. I have no owners manual to this machine so a bit in the dark.

As Andrew says, could be a few different things going on here, as you know you are supposed to hold the lever back in general use to blow valve off and prevent out of sequence problems - a sticker above window reminds you - I might be tempted to remove Anti Drop Valve From Ram Block on side of boom ( carefully with engine stopped and pressure relieved ) then get a machine to push both booms in fully. Then refit Valve and slowly push out 6 ins then pull all the way back, and keep going out further and back, but first job is to look at hoses in the back of the boom to see how stretched etc they are, just an opinion - sold lots of 535-95 but never had this problem, so I may be talking rubbish!

Can you not plug it into the auxiliaries on the front carriage?

Funny as we've just had this exact same problem on our 535-95, it's been busy on the bales and ended up sticking out 6 foot before we had a chance to look at it.

The get it back in use that pipe with a QD you have, plug it into the male coupling on the boom (the one you can see from the cab. Then hold the other end in a drum whilst someone telescopes it in from the cab, it will come back in slowly and drain the excess oil into the drum until both are fully retracted and sync'd again.

Now why didn't I think of that Andrew, been a long day.

You’d have thought of it in the morning, sometimes a sleep helps!
If it’s a new to you machine that’s come with a hose it may be a recurring problem, ram seals may have gone somewhere? Have you tried retracting while pushing at something fixed like a shed stanchion?

Only had it a couple of weeks, bought it off the classified on here. Always loaded with tractors before but needed more reach. Will have a try in the morning , thanks for the advice, its given me a starting point.

In 20k + hrs of running 535-95s it’s nothing I’ve come across,I’m of the opinion it’s a seal, also could be something as simple as the piston coming unscrewed inside the ram,had this happen recently on one of my JCB machines.

Today I attached the QR pipe , one end to the main ram and other end to the 3rd service, pressed the button and it came straight back in , job sorted I thought, but now every time I extend the ram it retracts about 5mm less each time. Bugger. Doesn't sound a lot but it would mean bleeding it a couple of times each day when in use. will have to decide weather it is the ram or the valve block which is leaking. The ram looks a heavy piece of metal to be throwing about.
Thanks for your input , we know a bit more today than yesterday.

Fully extend the boom.
Stop engine, disconnect the pipe from the rod end of the cylinder and blank off the pipe. Leave the cylinder port open.
Start up and try to extend the boom again. If oil comes out the port it must be the cylinder seals
