JD 30 series air ingress FYI

Maybe of use to someone chasing a 1307.04 periodic fault code, generally when working the tractor at higher revs, but light to medium load, that is due to air ingress into the suction side of the low pressure fuel system - i.e. between tank and the electric fuel pump, which leads to erratic rail pressure and hence the code. In extreme cases the tractor will hunt now & then or stumble.

Equipped with my trust length of clear PVC hose it was confirmed air present in the fuel flowing from the secondary filter to the HP CR pump. You could also hear the odd bubbles of air passing through the lift pump as its note subtley changed every so often.

Moving the clear pipe around, there was no air coming from the tank upto the primary filter ruling that half of the system out, but I did have air coming from the primary filter to the pump. Bypassing the filter I had no air.

Will add that ALL the fuel lines are recently new good quality R10 with spring clamps. Do not use jubillee ones!!

You'll all be shouting "it's the o-ring betwixt filter and glass bowl" but it wasn't. Leaving the shipping plug in a new filter (not fitting the glass bowl) I still had air!

In this case it was a split /perished o ring on one of the un-used ports on the top of the filter head. Absolutely no sign of dampness around it of fuel leaking out, but able to suck air. So both plugs resealed and the plastic bleed nipple also checked- this wasnt very tight and its o ring was flat and going hard.

Having done that, no air bubbles whatsoever and running like a champ.

Note that sucking air would be more pronounced when the primary filter is past its best, so if you have a tractor that is good with a new filter, but then gives the impression the filter is blocked again say 200hrs later, you are sucking air! (but check with the clear hose!!) Test, don't assume!
