JD autoquad transmission wear

Our old 6420, now approaching 18k hrs is starting to feel seriously worn in the transmission, when going between splitters getting a noticeable knock/bang and when braking, which I think is the 4wd as when we’ve taken off the front prop for baling in heavy crop it doesn’t do it.

Are there any know parts that fail or will she keep going subject to usual oil and filters? Don’t want a big breakdown!

I think you can calibrate the powerquad but some of these guys will tell you better. Do you mean the front axel knocking as you release brakes? My 64 does this

Depending on which pinion shaft bearing its got, on the early ones sometimes the bearing cage breaks up and all the rollers drop to the bottom. This can then cause a knock when going from forward to reverse, easy test is engine off put it in park then rock it back and forth and see if you can hear it knocking.
Also it’s worth pulling the suction screen out the back and checking for debris.

Yeap, when it engages and disengages it really bangs, not so bad with new rear tyres on the road now, but compared to our newer 6430 which is barely detectable, a bit concerning.

Will check the filter screen and do the rocking. We recently did a recalibration through the dashboard and it is a lot better. The intermediate shaft between the engine damper and auto quad has a tiny bit of play, probably 2/3mm. I did think to replace the damper and ujs and possibly engine mounts?

Not bad, has been a stop gap tractor for us, obviously I’m a bit thick bought it as advertised with 4,000 hrs but in actuality this was 14,000 from a certain dealer 4 years ago..... I imagine in depreciation it’s lost £2,500 year, mechanicaly the only failure has been the front diff pinion, a starter, battery, rear tyres and usual oil filters and gas in accumulators and ac. So weighing up a change to something a bit newer now!

Not related to op question but 18k hours is testament to the durability of the 6000 series tractors

Imo the powerquad gearbox is the most proven gearbox on the market people say why do you want a gearstick i love the jd powerquad box but its horses for corses id sooner change gear myself than wait for a computer to do it for me

Agreed it’s a stunning piece of engineering - it’s over two solid years of continuous running! Worn a lot better than a JD2650 we had, that made almost 16,000 hrs before being moved out. Am I mad to be considering a 6,000 hr Fendt 415 as a replacement in light of this?

6000hrs will be fine if it’s been serviced right.

You say it doesn’t do the knocking after the 4wd shaft has been removed- do you mean the powrquad/splitters knocking? If it drives fine with the 4wd shaft off then the powrquad should be ok? Sounds like you’ve gotta slight ratio mismatch between front rear wheels due to uneven wear normally...?
