Jersey cows

Is there anyone on here that milks only Jersey cows, if so how much pence per litre do you normally get over base price, because of the higher milk solids......my son wants to set up his own dairy unit using Jersey cows, im not against it, however im not that well informed about the pros and cons.....but im very interested in the value of their milk over base price......thanks for your help

Although @Tim G is quite modest he has started small, but is getting a better milk price through adding value - but slowly growing his herd of jerseys. An alternative approach but one worth considering for someone setting up a new herd.

We sell at £1.40 per 1 litre bottle or £2.40 for a 2 litre bottle. The bottles, lids and labels are from memory 35p (1litre) and 37p (2litre) each so liquid milk is just over £1/litre.
Seems a lot for your bottles. Just checked our blowplast polys are 11.77 for 2s & 11p for 1s
Caps are 0.64p each
Labels are 1.2p each

I see the advantages of doing it that way, however my son has no interest in bottling the milk himself then marketing it... personally I would love that challenge, but I have plenty to do with my own herd without taking on more

Yes it`s a whole different ball game to milking cows. It works here because 1 son deals with the cows &` tother deals with the bottles. They help each other but their own resposibilities take priority

The benefits of scale perhaps?
And our labels are as much as the bottles......

Still, had an email this morning to say our glass ones will be delivered tomorrow.
Ok Bottles come by the artic load. from Seaways.
Caps are £13 a box (2000)
Do have to get about 100,000 labels of each type to get the price. Olympus labels.
Pity we were not nearer, We do supply a couple of locals with bottles & caps for a modest mark up

I've averaged

17/18. 36.2ppl
18/19. 37.6ppl
19/20. 37.1ppl

That's mostly jerseys on 100% spring calving profile on an Arla contract. I don't know what the base would have been.

You Arla boys ............. Now my backside feels painful having been rogered by Glanbia
So @high-yield32 to answer your OP, it really comes down to contract.

We are AYR, level profile, average across the year 6.2 & 4.1 but each 1ppl on the base swings the price received approx 2.4ppl up or down so can touch the highs of mid 40s to the lows of 20ppl
However Jersey cows have other advantages over other breeds such as better fertility and feet.
Good core of Jerseys for the solids backed up with milkier animals such as Danish Red or HoJo is where we look to be heading

No idea where you are based but happy to talk to your son via PM if you want
