Fohn winds,or is that nearer Inverness?
Yeah we get a fohn effect over here on the east fairly frequently, but more often we get a wave set up which forms the lenticular clouds.
Today we got prefrontal lenticulars for a spell around midday.
Have seen it be very localised for example forecast or actual wind speeds upwind of say 20 mph have seen localised 50 mph stripping leaves off trees.

Our drive.
We've cleared it twice today.

Ended up having an x-ray at the hospital, nothing broken.

The winds are already here. Chunks of ice coming off twigs and the electricity cable hurled into windows from the current freezing rain, as well. Metal gates covered in ice. Slippery underfoot.
What part of Devon are you? on the Blackdowns we have just has a few flakes of snow otherwise a windy but not bad day

Only two areas in UK get the Fohn effect AFAIK, that is where you refer to in North East Scotland, and here on the North Wales coast, meaning some of the mildest winter temperatures ever recorded in the UK tend to be in these areas due to a warming effect peculiar to the geography of both locations.
Fohn winds, you learn something new every day. (y)

You hear them only very occasionally, never really knew what they were however I’ve often wondered.

Just thought they were something to do with super fast jet stream winds.

I remember driving home from Cerrig to Clynnog fawr one night, traveling through Capel Curig going towards pen y gwyrid and the temp was -7, I remember going over the top of the pass and starting down the other side going towards Llanberis, and watching the outside temp guage on the car rising, about ½ a mile down the pass the temp had gone from -7c to +7c. In the 10 years I did that commute that was the only time I saw the foehn effect in action.

Yes, as a glider pilot that's what I live for, Lee waves!! Used to go up to Portmoak a lot esp during Spring and Winter to fly in the wave.
The wind speed variances tend to be caused by the rotor below the wave, very turbulent air just under the wave and believe you me not at all pleasant flying in it, it's quite alarming to see one wing tip 6ft up and the opposite wingtip 6ft down, thank god for carbon fibre!
Vertical components of anything up to 15kts (1500ft/min) once you get into the smooth laminar airflow above the rotor but rotor can be plus G and negative G, a stunning way to fly but as you say better in Scotland with big mountains/hills, Wales with Talgarth and Denbigh and also get wave over the River Seven in a NW'ly from the Black Mountains, Sutton Bank and even parts of Devon you get wave.
Foehn effect can pretty much happen anywhere where there are big hills and suitable wind direction
