Job Offers and Time Wasters, The End of Employing People?

We advertised in the south east for a HGV and Tractor driver with some livestock work. Plenty of variety and only occasional weekend work.
We had a few applicants but only two that were considered for interview, one despite asking loads of questions about the job, never turned up for interview.
The other was very keen for the job and after checking references was offered the job and was to start in 10 days time after having given 4 weeks notice to his present employer. He had a record of working in agriculture and also transport.

We had a training program lined up and ways of getting the necessary qualifications. He had worked with livestock but needed animal transport tickets etc.
He asked for a pay scale that was at a flat rate per week which was generous compared to GFW rates.

Having spent a considerable amount of time and expense on drawing up contracts and training, he sent a text yesterday to say that he wouldn't be coming as he had family issues.

It does make you wonder if anyone wants a job at all these days?

I think part of the problem is your location. SE will always be difficult due to number of other jobs on offer

Probably easier to find staff in more deprived parts of the country … but whether they’d be any good is a moot point

If he genuinely had family issues that prevented him from taking the job, it's understandable, family first.
Might have got a better offer or just decided it wasn't for him and used the family issue as an excuse.

Flat rate per week would make me pause, would depend on what the contract said. I'm not a salary fan unless its closely attached to hours.

When people are looking for a job, they tend to apply for a few at once and pick the best. Some people who don't actually need a job apply, just to see what's out there.

I can safely say the whole of the UK is in a similar situation. A good friend has recently closed a very good facilities maintenance business due to being fed up either finding staff, or getting people who are as able as They claim. He was paying very good money for what is in reality labouring. I’ve recently taken on managing the whole of the UK and every contractor I have says the same regularly.

i’ve no idea the exact reason behind the problem, but it’s concerning.

Talking with our regular postman the other day, local delivery office has been short staffed for a good while and getting worse they struggle to recruit, people start only last a week, should of been 3 new starters next week 2 have give backword before they've even started. Couple of months ago talking with manager of the village nursery where my daughter goes, she said they were advertising for 3 members of staff and said they pay over the rate of alot of others but she was trying to take 3 on in the hope of having 2 of them still in 6 months,

My old chap lives in Cheshire, he says the post is very irregular as they can't get anyone to do it. Even though it's on the rural run which is one people used to queue up to do.
Makes you wonder what's changed.
Too few people wanting fulltime work, people working for themselves and getting by doing what they want when they want, workplace not a nice place to be these days?
I think covid made a lot of people question what they were doing.
