Thank you, I will pass that on. If the shaft snapped does that necessitate a split?Could be the plates or the seals leaking, they also had a tendency to break the shaft in the back end. Will the shaft turn with the engine running but the pto disengaged? The brake should hold it so if it spins free the shaft has probably snapped.
After that it wants pressure testing to check for leaks and to make sure full pressure is been supplied to the clutch, it may have just blown the plastic seal under the top cover if it’s never had one.
If you do find it’s the pto clutch it’s a cab off and splitting job, however it’s worth pressure testing the transmission pump, high/lo and mfwd as they will all have to come out to get the pto clutch.
No, that will come out the back, just need to drop the oil and remove the housing where the splined shaft comes out the back.Thank you, I will pass that on. If the shaft snapped does that necessitate a split?
There’s a small E-clip that comes of the end of the pto valve which causes the brake to stop working. You have to press the valve right in to see where it sits thoughWe've never had a 40 series PTO clutch failure, but we've re-sealed plently of shift covers. That would be the first place to look. Also we have seen the short oil supply pipes split or get worn causing blow-past.
On our own 2040, we had to replace the cover because the gear lever mounts wore through (OPU Cab). Upon fitting a refurbed secondhand unit, the PTO brake (which we thought had worn out) started working again.
Hi Phil don’t suppose you have a operators manual do you? I’m trying to figure out what a few levers do. TaIt’s right under your feet, if it’s got the gear leavers between your legs they go through the cover, if it’s an sg2 cab there’s a plate that comes out. The plastic seals no2 can split and you lose pressure to the pto or hi/lo.

I’ll have to look see if I can find it on my jd software, I wouldn’t have a paper/pdf copy though. What levers are you unsure of? There’s not that many on 40 series to start with.Hi Phil don’t suppose you have a operators manual do you? I’m trying to figure out what a few levers do. Ta
The yellow one will be selectable pto spread 540/1000, the green one if memory serves me right will be creeper gear. I’ll see if I can find the manual tomorrow if I get time and double check.Yellow forward / backward handle between under the seat and green side to side handle also under the seat but to one side next to the diff lock (I’m guessing) foot pedal. The dash shows PTO 540, I’m wondering if one of those levers may change it to 1000.
Thankyou that’s very much appreciatedThe yellow one will be selectable pto spread 540/1000, the green one if memory serves me right will be creeper gear. I’ll see if I can find the manual tomorrow if I get time and double check.
