Hi,I have a john deere 6600(1996). I was Drawing filling today with tractor. About 10 ton a load. No bother. Went to put trailer in the shed, gearbox i think broke. It doesnt go into gear anymore but when it rolls , you can hear the back axle (left) grind. What is this?
New to john deere. I dont know much about them.

Will it drive in 4wd?
Yes. last night i was messing with it and put it in 4wd. In two secomds it jumped foreward and seems to have fixed the problem. It seems a bit more free , aswell it seems like it is pulling a bit better. I rang my mechanic and he thinks that it was a pin in the rear diff that seized or moved out of place. he said it might happen again tomorrow , or mightent happen at all. Its a very unusual thing to happen he said. (He also said that the tractor is perfect , its just that there is a 4 cylinder back end on a 6 cylinder tractor.)

I think the 6400,6506 and 6600 have a stronger back end than the 6100,6200 and the 6300. But the 6800 and 6900 are stronger again.

So you could say the 6400 has a 6 cylinder back end.

Yep its the 6400 back end in her. The 6900 has its own and i think the 6800 has the 6400 back end

It doesn’t. Same as 6900 I think. 6810 definitely same as 6910. And let’s face it 6600 not masses more HP than 6400 so you have been a bit unlucky.
