John Deere 6900 electric fuel lift pump

Well, back in the uk we had a 6510 and had a pump problem and found it did as you say.
When I bought this 6900 here some 3/4 years ago the pump came on with the ignition. This was significant as it was getting tired, so if you didn’t here it, banging the tank made it run. Soon got fed up of that and changed the pump.
Well, the tractor stopped this week, so looking to the pump, I find now it doesn’t run with the ignition but does if I turn the key more :scratchhead: .
I haven’t got it running just yet but I am assuming I will get it going and it will just stop again?

Prime it and see what happens.

I had trouble with my 6600 cutting out shortly after priming and not going again until it was reprimed. Took half a dozen primings to limp back across a few fields to the yard. Turned out to be crud in the tank restricting flow into the pump. I had the tank off to clean it thoroughly clean it out and it's been fine since.

Why are you asking?

Did a filter change on one a few years back and couldn't get it to prime. The pump was on the bottom on the dip tube that goes into the tank and it had fallen off. Put it back on and it primed correctly.

I am sure that mine have always run as soon as the key is on the first click, assuming that it is the electric lift pump in the tank you are talking about.

Yes, the electric pump in the tank Matthew. On what model are you referring?
What is really baffling me. When the old pump was at the end of its life, when the pump stopped while you were working, the tractor cut out. Hence why I thought that even if I got it started now (with the pump running under cranking) it would stop again. But it ran an hour yesterday.

If it has got fuel up to the injection pump with no leak back then I would have thought that the injection pump might pull it through from the tank with out the electric pump? My 6920s is auto power and has an inline pump that is under the filters and I am 99%sure runs all the time with the ignition on, the hoses were all getting perished and generally mank so I replaced them all last summer before I came over, that sorted most of the leak back issues as no air could get in. I am just going to check round the cattle so I will turn the key on that and the 6410 and see what happens. There is a filter as mentioned above I think that is on the bottom of the pipe that goes into the tank, might be worth taking the plate out of the cab floor and fishing it out of the tank and seeing what state it is in. If its not been out and you bought the tractor from here who knows what delights are attached to the bottom of it!?

Is the 6920 common rail?. I have a 6930 here and as you say the pump on that runs all the time.

1997.6800 .fuel pump primes fuel filter by turning key to start with the f/r lever in drive.
2001 6410 fuel pump runs continuously with ignition on.

Have you checked the suction gauze at the bottom of the pipe under the pump. My has got semi blocked by black crud a couple of times. It’s like a power boost when you clean it.:)

My W reg 6910 pump comes on as soon as you turn the ignition on, it needs to as I have to leave it for 30secs before I can start it.
My y reg 6410 currently has that issue too. I think the one way valve on the lift pump has given up and fuel is draining back. I guess it’s also time to change those pesky fuel hoses too.o_O

I had the pump out (as I thought it may be the fault) and the filter was clean. Bear in mind, we only changed the pump 18 months ago.
In my head I am just trying to make sense of it...
It came with a farm we bought so I had a lot to do with the previous owner. He was quite lazy but also quit ingenious, so I’m thinking, maybe it kept cutting out due to the tank filter being blocked and his remedy was to make the pump run non stop - maybe that remedy was fused and now it has gone back to original but it’s not a problem due to the filter being clean. (The filter was dirty when we changed the pump)

Could be a wire of the pump in tank.had this on a 6900 years ago and tractor stopped in a vey awkward place.had to remove pump from tank and re solder wire.its like working through the top of a coffee jar, such is the poor access to the top of fuel tank.maybe my hands are too big.
