On the band wagon and have ordered my new John Deere 750, looking ahead at my drilling schedule I have Spring Beans going in first, on some over wintered chopped straw wheat stubble, have any of you any red hot tips on set up of the drill? Any must nots?

Pay JD for the optional extra of simon Chilles or my operators mobile number ! ;-)

it must surely be on their options list by now !

Seriously though it's straight forward enough machine to set - get depth as deep as you can and you will get about 3-4" set coulter, firming and closing pressures to suit conditions on the day

Simon's operators course is very useful, I should've attended before drilling last autumn. Found I needed less fan speed than recommended and don't be fooled into running high coulter pressure because you are planting deep.

@SimonD What did you replace the co4 with in the end? I'm sure I asked but can't quite remember. T

Its a job to keep up with Simon's drill replacements over the last few years, what have you had now, Claydon, co4, Rapid, Powerharrow drill, co4 again and JD all in 4 or 5 years? Have I missed any? Any news with your soil zoning, you have gone a bit quiet.

Trying to work out the tone, 8 years arable though. No Power\harrow drill though. Horsch was ok but wanted to something more soil friendly hence tried a Claydon but it didn't suit the soil type at the time so the period was short. CO4 with Sumo legs was ok but a stop gap until i decided on the direct disc drill i wanted and managed to find one in 8 months. The JD will be around for the foreseeable future as it's ideally suited to our light land and with the work put into it this summer has been a cost effective purchase. It hasn't cost me a silly amount like a new drill or anything. Hopefully it will help with the small but noticeable blackgrass encroachment, you ought to try it Tim. The soil zoning hasn't inspired me so i'm putting it on at a set rate until i can see a benefit.
I may have had a few drills but the end result is i know what works and what doesn't. The JD has by far established the best crops our ground has seen (at this time of year) and i have every confidence in it moving forward. I don't see it being changed for anything other than a new one should i want too.

With being back in full time work my time is short so i need a system that doesn't utilise unnecessary passes adding little value to the process. Ditching the cultivator is the right choice for me and our farm.

I'd be interested I joining you if within reasonable distance from an airport
@Louis Mc could I call to you sometime soon to see your cover crops ???? I was due to visit last month with the NKG groups you hosted but work prevented. I started DD last season & am planning cover cropping next season. So, any non bias farmer advice would be helpful.
