Don't agree that a 456a is too wide! We baled behind a 12ft cut Dominator 76 with one for years and it was hardly wide enough in big Barley crops!
Possibly too wide to move around/access tight gateways - agree that the wider the better when following almost any combine!
Have got on quite well splitting combine swaths into half with a rake

A 456a is something like 9' 4" on the road, too wide for around here. I don't bale any straw and I only bale what I've rowed up so I can make the rows to suit

I ran an International 445D for twenty years and it was a very good baler until it went bang, in a big way, changed for a 430,again a good baler, but too small , as in it wasn't possible to avoid running on the swath. Changed again for a MF128 after one season. Great baler, but too big and clumsy for the lanes round here . Even on an A road the outside wheel was on or over the white line. Swapped again for a JD456a ,which on paper is almost the same size as a 128. In practice however , it is much more manoeuvrable on tight lanes( even with banks) and gateways. I run it on a 90hp Zetor and wherever the tractor will go,the baler will follow it. The reason for the better manoeuvrability is because the drawbar ( not hydraulic on this baler), swings across tighter to the left, in the transport position.

I had 1 job last year that I had to take my MF 124 in across the customer's lawn because the gate straight into the field from the road wasn't wide enough so anything much bigger than the 124 isn't really an option. Around here small bales are usually made in the small, awkward fields. I bale with a David Brown 996 so big tractors aren't adding to the access problems.

Ran a 128 myself for a year or two and exactly like you say, very good baler but also very clumsy.
This is the issue with all "wide" pickup balers. Unless you are baling haybob rows you need the wide pickup, especailly baling anything over a 12ft head. 17ft only just fits in my 456a. If you want to do contract work you almost need two balers, a narrow pickup one for getting into tight places, and a nice wide pickup high throughput one for the big jobs. Then charge more for the smaller jobs. Either that... or an inline massey (if you have the £££ to spend)

There's no such thing as a bad baler.
there's good ones and ones that aren't set up right
Dave ,we got a welgar 630 ,not been used for 10 year and had baled its needles ,
had steff henry one afternoon ,to go through it , 350£ Had 5 hours on it , runs perfect now ,the guy knows his stuff ,and well worth having him service baler
