So what are heavy duty jump leads
If i do a search for heavy duty I get 3000amp
If I search for HGV Jump leads I get 1200amps
Or are neither of these heavy enough to get a tractor going??

Cheers

section of the cable, ive 50 mm2 on anderson plugs never a problem
(As a rule of thumb, you should use a 10–25mm2 cross-section for petrol engines and 35–50mm2 for diesel. An effective jump lead must also be flexible and long enough to connect the two batteries.found this on the net)

I invested in what I thought were a good set of jump leads, heavy duty, high amps etc etc and they turned out to be shite tbh.
In fact I am fairly sure they weren't even copper as they have burst through with internal corrosion.
If they are for jump starting straight from cold I would (and have) invest in a good jump pack. I have one of the Noco starters and it works very well, I also have a cheaper Sealey version which is nowhere near as expensive but nowhere near as good. It will start a car or pickup that is half trying but no more than that.
If they are for connecting to the none starting vehicle and left to charge it up for 15 minutes or so I think Halfords are going to be as good a place as any. Just make sure they are copper and are connected to strong crocodile clips well. A lot aren't.

I bought a very good set of heavy duty jump leads probably 20 years ago, maybe from Screwfix? Only problem is that the crocodile clips are even heavier duty and literally need 2 hands to open them these days as I’m 20 years older! As already said I now opt for the Noco as an easier and more convenient option.

Most of the amps you see advertised might be rather misleading. Continuous amps rating will always seem very low the higher advertised amps will be for limited time. Durability can be worth more than peak current. If you do want good jump leads then buying a length of welding cable seems a better place to start than pre made jump leads.

I have a set made from 35mm2 welding cable that are about twice the length of any off the shelf jump leads I've seen. Not sure what the clamps claimed to be rated for, but they have the cable connected to copper inserts in the jaws of the clamps. Downside of this is they are rather big and awkward getting on some batteries. The weak link with jump leads tends to be the small contact area between the clamps on the leads and the terminals. Anderson plugs will likely make far better contact than heavy duty clamps.

Seen many saying copper and a good named make, they were Rough and Copper coloured aluminium and just by the weight could tell and I use welder leads but my extension ones are bit on the heavy side and not good to pull about for the stick end.
