Does anyone else remember the old bale hooks? I think I only worked on one farm where they were used but the guys would never handle small bales without them

I've still got a couple I use, never got on with both at the same time though. Long all steel hook in my right hand, and old fashioned fingers with my left!
I checked that my little wooden handled one like in the picture is still hanging up in the workshop just now!

I do wonder how much of the kit mentioned in this thread is still being made in one form or another around the world.

We had a bale elevator to get help load them into them into an old brick barn. My grandad would remove some tiles and battens, then drop little bales in through the roof. The person dropping bales on the elevator had no idea where in the barn the people stacking were and they had little clue when the next bale would drop in on them.

A quick google found a company still making bale elevators, though I expect there aren't many sold in the UK now.

Yes I can remember those. Also used it to lift the zig zag harrows when bunged with potato tops while drilling. Did that on the move as I stood on the rear running board ready to hop off and walk behind to lift the offending harrow then step back onto the running board.

Sam Turner and Sons Northallerton sell them

I can remember when the girls at my secondary school wore petty coats under their skirts. If one slipped enough to be visible, the normal warning was "Charlie's dead". Much the same as when a boy had some of his fly buttons undone, the response was "your flying without a licence".
