Trailed forage harvesters with their own engine, because the 100hp needed for the forager was massive And 75hp was plenty enough for all the other jobs.

Yep 35’s and the early 135’s had red ‘clamshell’ fenders. They remained a higher cost option even when the ‘square’ type was introduced…hence they disappeared

A bit like the french multi stage beet harvesters, topper,lifter and loader and about four trailers running about like mad. Now it’s one monster harvester and a fastrac and trailer. It’s just dull.

Its a bit like the steam ploughing teams of victorian britain.
By 1900 and in full recession they were back to horses

That showed some grit, imagine going back to horse ploughing, when you had seen so much quicker and easier.
Be like going back to loading small bales in the field with a pitchfork.

There was probably still plenty of draft houses in use and available back when steam ploughing was at its peak. Would take a long while breading enough of them now if we had to go back to them from tractors.

I think you'll struggle to find enough labour to run a topper,lifter and loader and three trailers these days. I think lack of conversation and teamwork has taken more of the enjoyment out of farming it's a very solitary job now.
