Hi All
Does anyone use one of these as their one and only drill? I know a lot were sold in 2012 when it was really wet and the Vads and Horschs wouldn't go! Will they do a good enough job on fairly light, stoney land and do they take much pulling?

We use one as our only drill and I'm really pleased with it. On light and stony land they'll do a really good job and horsepower will depend a bit on seedbed preparation and drill configuration. Ours has paddle boards in front of the coulters, harrow tines and press wheels with a hydraulic fan. We use around 45hp per meter but I've never felt this is too little, even with the paddles down, however we're always drilling in to a pressed or worked seedbed as opposed to raw ploughing. Maybe we could get away with less but as it's a hire tractor I don't want to chance booking something too small (same price for 160hp as 180hp).

It's the carrying that can be an issue. I've seen a 6m one worked on nothing more than a JD 6620 on level and light ground but it's the lift and tyres that are tested as well. Put slopes or a front tank in the equation and you will need 180hp easy.

Had our 4m on a MF7618 without front weights for a day in the autumn, wheelies were common with seed in the tank

I bought one a 4 meter last year, as we are now later drilling. I love it crops look good where it's drilled.i use it on a 6930, no probs at all next door use an older ts 6m on a jd 6930 standard.

I may actually upgrade mine to a 6 meter for next season. Only gripe I have found is the tank can't get to low as it doesn't empty the last bit very well.

Meant to say I love the
Simplicity of a mounted tine drill.

Agree with that, the tank is a bit of a pain at times though as seed does like to sit up behind the centre pipe and distribution pipes. I suspect untreated seed would flow well but the treated stuff does tend to hang about a bit.

I use a 6m on JD7530 (175 HP) and it is boss of it. I have no paddles or rollers, if we did we would probably struggle to lift it with 1T of seed on board.
I need to juggle the tine spacing on the rear harrow, as some of the width it leaves it flat, and some of it is ridged, other than that a good drill.
The new metering system might be better, but the single accord unit struggles at high speed (above 10k) on my 6m. It turns so fast that the seed can't fall into it quick enough. I have slowed the gearing down to allow for that but then max application is approx. 200kg/ha.

Great response guys. Very encouraging. I think that they have redesigned the tank but not sure if that's to do with seed flow. I think trying one has to be the next step.

We have one and it was our only drill until a couple of years ago. Managed to pull a 6m with a CS 110 for a short while, but as mentioned the lift was the main thing. Depends on how you are using it, conditions, whether you are using levelling boards etc. Great trash clearance though, would love to retrofit it with electric metering and blockage sensors if money was no object.
