Dog has been diagnosed with conjunctivitis by the vet and prescribed Isathal (Fusidic acid) for a week which seemed to work, but after a week it returned, back to vet, same diagnosis, same prescription, same result. Gunk back again now, best course of action please?

Ask for a swab test of the gunk to check which bug is involved so its the right antibiotic?

Many years ago, I had the same problem in a dog. The vet diagnosed turned in eyelid (Entropian) and recommended an operation. I could't see that as the problem and put some Golder Eye Ointment on it. The eye cleared up within a week and I didn't use that vet again. If GEO is still on the market, it won't cost much to try it.

I had a cat with viral conjunctivitis. He had it as a kitten when I got him, but I didn't realise (also had ringworm). I was told by the vet that there was nothing to be done other than clean his eyes daily. It didn't seem to bother him unduly and he was ok about having his eyes cleaned. He lived til 16 1/2 and his eyes never got any better but equally never got any worse.

Yes golden eye ointment is still available, there are other brands too, all got chloramphenicol in. Tell the chemist you have a sticky eye when you wake up and he can sell it to you.

Never knew that . It was withdrawn at one time as it contained Mercuric Oxide but is now Chloramphenicol as you say
