A brief intro for those who dont know me.
My name is pete robinson and i am a fettler by trade , i served my time when it was a skilled job and you had to learn all aspects of the foundry , from making the cores, moulds, melting the metal and fettling the casting ready for the machine shop, unfortunately it is now classed as a job for monkeys and the skill has been taken out of it.
Nowadays i have progressed to being a crane driver in a foundry and am one of only a handfull that carry molten metal from the furnace to the mould ( it's mostly done by remote now ).
this is my place of work and what i do , any questions just ask :)
Pete

Just a small vid of me shifting sand this morning

But what do you melt down ie clean scrap old scrap
And also if you melt mild steel down to pour what do you add to make it in to cast as cast is hard and brittle etc

We melt down normal steel offcuts , old railway track etc ,as for additions we do about 300 different grades of straight steel and about 150 variations of stainless, additives vary from copper, nickel, silicates etc, even i dont understand the chemistry of it all (but then again niether does our metallurgist )
