Been talking to a firm wanting energy barn sites, they will want me to sign a dno request form to see if any free capacity in the 33kv line, was there something on here a bit back about developers and capacity request forms.

I had the same request. The form they sent basically wanted me to apply on their behalf so that they would have the option on the grid capacity not me or another company, effectively tying you to that company. Same thing was going on with solar panel companies a couple of years ago. I think it's very underhand and it would put me off dealing with them. No way any farmer should do this, do the DNO in your name and if successful companies will be Qing up to put battery storage on your land.

How can you tell if power lines are 11kv or 33kv?
Simple way if they have just a few ribs on the insulators on top of poles they are likely 11 or 20 kv 33kv supplies usually have chains of 5 or 6 insulators. 66kv will have evenlonger insultor chains

I have started talking to a company about battery storage. I all ready have the sheds to do this with a 33kv running through the yard. Does anyone have a idea of what should be charging for rent?

Depends on local rents

I would say £6 psf plus 3-4K per MW installe, per annum.

Get a decent land agent (I know one) who specialises in this new market.

Make sure you have a decommissions bond or similar

Please let us know how you get on

The thought of all those batteries in a close location , scares me to hell.
Anyone know official HSE advice regarding charging batteries.
Charging batteries creates Oxygen and Hydrogen, how many times have we heard on this forum of batteries exploding during chargeing thanks to an odd spark?

Lead acid would be an explosion risk unless you had very good ventilation , that uses electric so affects the efficiency LI would be much safer charging but a bigger fire hazard LI will surley be the future i have heard there are plans to use batteries off cars to give them a second life use once there efficiency in a car has lost its edge there is apparently still plenty of life left in them for grid storage

How would you go about making a DNO grid capacity enquiry and any idea of the cost of making the enquiry, sorry if it has been covered on here before.

Lithium batteries are a serious fire risk when in quantity too.
They are not allowed to be transported by plane, and have caused serious problems in the latest Boeing Dreamliner which makes use of them

The actual storage capacity would be rated in KwH ( units ) or MwH
Bearing in mind the average 644 tractor battery is about 1000 VAH
ie. about one KwH
So 1000 batteries would give 1 MwH
One site i know has a differential between peak cost of delivering power and 8.5p / unit and a net rebate of 2.5p for export at this time, and a delivery cost of 2.5 at low usage, ie midnight to 5am.
This would seem to indicate a profit for storing for first thing 7-9am of about 8.5 pence per unit ie each battery.
I think day time storage rates would give a profit nearer 2-3 p.
I suspect margins at weekends and bank holidays would be different

Well, 1 40ft container should be 1/2MW from what I gather with the bods I'm talking with (they mentioned 40 or so containers for 29MW) so I'd hope you'd get more than 1MW for 10,000sq/ft shed. Just seems that the price Rob was bandying about i.e.. 20k/per annum for a 10,000sq/ft shed seems to me to be taking the pee. Industrial unit lets would bring in nearer 40k/year. He has 33KVA run right past his shed, so not exactly going to break the bank to connect. With luck he will send you a PM frustratedfarmer, as told him to do so. My agent is good but was more into solar farms rather than storage.
