There’s also weight restrictions on both tractor and trailer, however I don’t think anyone takes any notice until it all goes pear shaped!
Basic at 16 to keep legal you can drive a grey fergie with a tyrer trailer ?.

So what is the weight limits? I am keen to find out as my nephew is going for his test soon and thinks we ought to let him loose on the roads pulling silage bales back home [emoji61] [emoji32]

Check widths quoted above. Is the potential tractor to wide? Tandem axle bale trailer? Are the axles more than 0.845m apart? If they are then he cant use it to haul bales.

Weight limit is the same as regular tractor and trailer. Trailer cannot gross more than 18 tonnes, tractor up to 12 but note the width limit of 2.45 m!
trailer cannot be 4 wheeler and there are restrictions on the axle distance meaning most modern tandem axle trailers are not allowed.

As above, it’s more about width than weight! Here’s a FW article on it.

Even PC Bryant ( or the journalist ) has got it wrong. A 17 year old with a cat f license is entitled to drive the max 31 tonne limit without the need to pass a cat B.

Can anyone help is there a legal weight limit for a 16yr old on a tractor? Cheers daz

As has been stated on here it’s all about the width. 2.45 m is the limit and a close coupled or single axle trailers. In reality close coupled means an Ifor Williams type trailer ( trailers from other manufacturers are available) and a single axle trailer the max axle limit for a trailer is 10 tonnes and 3 tonnes max on the hitch you’re limited to a 13 tonnes max trailer. By the time you knock of the trailer weight you’re probably down to a 7 or 8 tonne load.

Thanks for the knowledge [emoji848] we do not have any thing that large, our valtra loader tractor is 2.3 metres wide and our single axle bale trailer is the same.... We cannot go much bigger as some of the parish roads are quite tight especially one particular bridge.

What is the weight limit for an 18 to 21 year old with a tractor & trailer please @Simon Chiles ? An NFU "expert" told me last week that even with a full B and F licence they were limited to 7.5 tonnes until 21 years old. That was the first time I'd heard that. Nothing on the government website about it.

I have 10 tonne tractors towing 14 tonne twin axle grain trailers, so just under the 31t limit fully loaded.

Answering my own question here:

I am confused now, how much weight can a 16 yr old legally handled combined tractor plus trailer?

I think your expert is confusing agricultural tractors and agricultural motor vehicles, amv’s do need a cat B license and if over 7.5 tonnes you do need to be over 21.
Don’t forget that although the max weight is 31 tonnes the trailer weight is still restricted to 18290kg, your 14 tonne trailer ( if it does hold 14 tonnes) might be over the limit.

No limit on tractor weight providing it’s less than 2.45m wide. No limit on trailer weight providing it’s less than 2.45m wide, and has only a single axle. As the max axle load is 10 tonnes and the drawbar max load is 3 tonnes (s)he’s limited to a max trailer+load weight of 13 tonnes.

When I was a lad, living in northern Ireland at 16 I was only allowed a tractor up to 2450kg, is this no longer the case ?

What happens when the tractor is wider than 2.45m?
