Level 3 agricultural courses

Daughter wants to do this course, initially wanted to go down the vet route but bit of a change of direction. I forgot to ask at the open day but what age can they do the extra tickets? Can this be in yr 1? She wants to do, quadbike, chainsaw, telehandler, spraying etc. Be handy to have asap, I guess the minimum age is 16 or is there a min age requirement for any of the above? Some of the above not as important but to drive the telehandler would be handy.

My son has had to do his various certificates since finishing his college course. There was talk of him doing them at college but the reality was they could not seem to organise them. Do the certificates though a training group . The cost will be the same as if they are done in college and quite often are done on a one to one basis which can be better for the candidate.

I had plenty more questions for the open day but might go to the 2nd open day in June now we know a bit more. I believe the certificates are cheaper if done while at collage even though it's done through an outside provider.
What we were wondering is how soon can she do these courses. Some be dead handy now and some be ideal if done soon as possible in yr 1 at college

I would go back to the next open day. Time in reconnaissance is rarely wasted. Go and look at different colleges too.

I think you can do the courses anytime for private use but do you have to be 21 to drive a forklift on the road ??
Yes that's correct if over 7.5 ton. Nothing stops her helping feeding tho on private land. Same as a quadbike. I'd like her to gain experience elsewhere and will likely have to use a quad so a ticket will be needed there. Or if it never stops raining we'll have to get a quad and park the gator.

Yes got plenty of time. She's only in yr10 anyway so we're a bit ahead of the game anyway. She was always hell bent on being a vet but this last yr with a lot of bullying at school it's changed her mind a bit to get a bit more hands on. At least with level 3 it contributes to a few a levels. Need to check that 1...

We all did a telehandler certificate course when at agri college in the 90's. Wasn't worth the paper it was printed on so I had to start again for site work a few years later..
So if your spending money on courses and certificates make sure they are recognised in as many places as possible.

Does she intend to do A levels ?
If not i think the "foundation" courses the colleges run are a bit basic & more valuable to the college as bums on seats than good learning. ( From friends experince but best not go into detail here )

I think for a 16 year old a 2 year apprentiship is probably a better start, along with days with supervising college tutors.
Then at 18 decide on a suitable college course

Sounds like she has the ability-I would push her to do A-levels; even if it’s at a different school. Be a lot easier route to a degree. Not sure if the a-level bit is attached to her school(?) mine was and most of the bad apples left after yr11

There are age limits to drive a telehandler on the road. You can take the test at 16. You can drive a machine under 3.5 tonne at 17 on the road and then there are further increments in size with age.

They wouldn’t let my son do Telehandler certificate until he was 16!
Our local YFC has some funding abilities for training support. Be worth asking local if there are any trusts. Doing all the tickets in one go gets very expensive.

Telehandler will depend on V5 classification. Our 531.70 is down as a tractor so ok at 16 with a tractor licence pass. Our 520-4 is 18 as not over 7.5t it gets complicated to work through scenarios.

Depends on V5 and classification. Newer telehandlers are classed as tractors.
