Must be rubbing on another live wire somewhere.
Some brands ( Claas being one ) put the switch on the negative side rather than on the positive side, would that be a possibility?

The side lights are classic wipac reversing lights as used on the series 2 landrovers etc. I'll give you a note of the wiring and colours once i dig out my leyland diagrams and where they should go to on the switch. Is it still the 4 position rotary switch on the dash? My money would be on the switch failing or corrosion on the spade terminals. Have you got a voltmeter and do you know how to use it to test voltage or continuity? Ta. Just finished rewiring a 272.

The front sidelights and rear taillights are fed power by a Blue wire with red stripe. All the side and taillights go back to a lucar connector joint which is fed by a red wire which goes back to pin 3 on the rotary light switch. All the lights are earthed by the body work - so only one positive connection goes to all the side and taillights. If you put the sidelights or headlights on then both the left and right sidelights and the rear taillights come on. The trailer socket will also have power for trailer sidelights as well.

The light switch is fed on pin 2 by a brown wire which is always live from the battery (via the live connection on the starter motor solenoid).

The switch is not connected but lights are on
The side lights are on all the time ? Then you have a live feed to the blue wire with red stripe or the red that should come from the switch. The end of that wire will be dangling behind the panel and touching a live. The insulator on the connectors tends to go brittle and fall off.
