Just read the SFI book, low input grassland and hedge row management will replace my Bps payments or I could go for herbal leys , there's a few other options that may add a bit more , depending on how much extra paperwork and hassle I want , on the whole fairly positive for a livestock farm.
It won’t though will it as it won’t replace income foregone

Trouble is,if you're in an upland outright livestock area there's no arable land to use like that. Closest farm to us that tried outwintering cattle on kale and bales had the RSPCA after them every day because do gooders were reporting the "poor cows stuck in mud and freezing to death". There is much to learn and admire about how NZ farms do things but a lot of it isn't transferable to all of the UK because of the length of winter and other parties or agencies poking their noses in.
What’s stopping you putting them on a wagon across the country? Easily go over the Pennines from here, there’s a lot of straw and feed comes over currently it might even be more efficient to move the cattle over there and not the feed and bedding over here.

If you are in the luxurious position you can run very low stocking rates then maybe he won’t. If not a lorry will be coming shortly
Not necessarily, that partly why I put "if we have to" in this post.

Well I think the low input offer plus the hedgerow offer and the in hedge trees, plus a few other things and we will be back up to BPS levels of payment, cut the cattle numbers if we have to and just keep the pedigree British blues as they seem to do well on low input unlike continentals,
a few more sheep and put my feet up and annoy folk that get offended on TFF.
Or alternatively none of the above, not had my mind made up yet.

it would seem that those sticking to a high input system will not only have the inputs to pay for but they won't be able to claim any worth while payment ? at least thats the way it looks from a quick read ?
