Livestock auctions near Oxford?

We were just having a discussion about livestock markets and were trying to think where the nearest markets would be to my family near Oxford. There is Thame, and Salisbury down our way, but where else in the region still has a market? It's just for curiosity!

We couldn't think of all of them. There seems to be a big gap in the South East but I suppose that is partly supply and demand with all the urban sprawl, and also a sign of the high price of development land that makes market sites into prime real estate.

In the South East there are only 2 markets, Ashford and Hailsham.

It is also badly served for abattoirs with only small abattoirs or a medium sized serving the ethnic communities.
Much better abattoirs closer in Belgium and Holland!!

A market near petersfield in Hampshire would be ideal. Plenty of livestock in the East Hants/West Sussex/Surrey area not really serviced by a market at all without a long drive. It would be right on the A3 dual carriageway. Close to the M27 and striking distance of the M25.

Any lottery winners out there fancy investing!?

Are there really that many livestock in that area.

I drive through and I must admit I do not see very many. There used to be lots of Dairy farms and small sheep farms, but most have gone.
A lot of the land seems to be used for horses with Haylage/Hay being made and winter grazing for a couple of large livestock dealers.
There are a few Suckler herds on the Downland but most of the calves are finished in the Eastern Counties.

I doubt another market would ever be viable!

Around 20 dairies within 15 miles of petersfield if I remember correctly from my dairy repping days (finished 18 months ago). Some large sheep flocks too.

Not sure how viable it would be but more stock locally than Salisbury I would think.

Thame would be the nearest to oxford, then rugby and Cirencester equidistant I would say, don't use Cirencester, but rugby better generally for fat lambs, certainly cull ewes, and only one of the two that sell fat cattle, store lambs often sharper t thame, and would say thame is up there with the best for store sales, would sell 450 a week throughout winter I would say, and average 300 a week through quieter summer months, maybe more

They have been thinking for about the last 15 years!! When they would have been paid millions to get out of their council lease. Still they have more than enough money, a decent site, just normally wrangling and faffing to and fro with council planning, know how they feel, same dealings with my house!!
