I’m looking for some general information to swat up for my livestock haulage certificate, does anyone have any useful links to what I need to know for the test?

Many thanks

Recently done mine, as many say - a lot is simply common sense, but as with everything created by white collars - there are some random things thrown in:

I did it years ago. total load of rubbish that proof of has never been asked for since. It's probably out of date now and needs redoing but as we rarely haul stock over 20 miles from home i'm not doing it again unless i'm absolutely forced.

I did take mine a few years back, there were 12 in the test, all sat at pc's
I was the highest scoring out of the 12 people....However, the only one that failed
They failed me for not giving an answer to one question,I flagged it and could not find it when I went back, So just make sure you give answers to all the questions
I think the pass mark was 80% my score was 96% Rubbish.
The only thing is when moving sheep from a mart I was asked to fill in my hauler's number,
I have to take a mate now if I travel over 60k for stock he has the cert.

What a pile of sh!t

Or you could take the view that the public would prefer livestock to be handled and transported in a professional and responsible manner an a few hours every five years is a small price to pay for a bit more public confidence in the industry

And it might stop 8 animals dying in one journey and the owner whinging about who's going to pay, rather than having any care for his stock.

I’d been moving cattle and sheep in a perfectly professional and welfare friendly manner for many a year...why did I suddenly need a sheet of paper to prove this
I’ll tell you why...to extract some cash from me and keep some boys in some jobs that’s why

40mile (65km)
I looked at the Gov website this morning and they need to be re-done every 5 years @yellowbelly

No they don't

The certificate is lifetime for you once passed

The transporter authorisation (over 65 kms < 8 hrs) needs renewing every 5 years with your County Council

It makes me roll my eyes that folks decry a simple multiple choice one off (up to 8 hours) yet don't know the rules

Couldn’t agree more, where are the NFU when these eejits dream up these schemes. It’s never bloody ending.... transport certificates, trailer tests, sheep dipping charges, fallen stock scheme, electronic tags, cross compliance, stewardship schemes and the never ending expansion of the red tractor scheme whereby every year there are more onerous records to keep. Everybody seems to have their sticky fingers in the farming pot at the moment and it’s about time we all said enough.

Rant over.....sorry.

Have you ever been asked by a member of the public if you are adequately trained to transport livestock?
Anybody can buy a farm and keep livestock without any training but the public seem fine with that. I am not condoning any form of abuse to livestock but a professional skilled farmer who has bred or reared these stock all of their lives is capable of moving them around in a purpose built livestock trailer to say otherwise is quite frankly insulting.
He/she does not need to be told by some clipboard wielding idiot on a laptop how to do it, it’s not rocket science and farmers should be treated with a bit more respect and assume they know their job and not assume ( as is today’s trend) that they do not.

My uncle is one of the best tractor drivers/field worksman I’ve ever seen, he remembers when thrashers etc came in and started spraying A LOT of potatoes for the best part of 40 years, most of the time with cabless tractors etc, his knowledge on chemicals he used 40years ago, best application rates and what it did is impeccable yet he can’t spray now because he doesn’t have a PA1/2 or nroso. He’s glad he packed up when legislation started getting tighter.

Yeah you're right. It's like all this nonsense about driving licences, insurance and MOT's, I've known people who have been driving since they were thirteen-making them pass a test, have a roadworthy car etc. is just a big con by the government

Different situation, the vehicle driver already has a driving test, he will already be insured and the livestock trailer will have to be legal and road worthy. Your totally missing the point which is how does a multiple choice questionnaire Increase a farmers ability to transport stock.
Laws are already in place for the welfare of all forms of livestock and rightly so, we don’t need another jobsworth extorting our money. A far simpler way to do it is to mail every farmer with a list of rules about moving stock with financial penalties if we are caught breaking these rules but that would be too simple. There is no need to extort money and time out of hard pushed businesses with plenty to do already.

I really can't see what the problems is. A few hours and a few quid to keep the cowboys out of the industry and enhance public perception. Why is everyone making such a fuss?
It’s never ending though, perpetuated by people like you, next it will be tests for every aspect of handling stock, tests for every aspect of machinery usage, tests for use of every drug and chemical, tests for driving off road ( car, tractor, quad ) tests for determining ailments in stock, tests for basically every aspect of modern farming, paid for by you know who from an ever decreasing pot.
