All you guys grumbling about the banks getting rich off your interest for 5 days - keep up - that hasn't happened for years.

It is cleared for interest purposes 2 days after being presented, which is when it debits the payer's account.

so it's out of one account in two days, but still takes another 2 to reach the other account? Where does it goes for those days? On holiday in Cornwall?

Ive been told, and i dont know if its true or not, it goes into an overseas account belonging to the bank to make interesr for them for a day or two before being sent out to the account of the person it was supposed to go to in the first place.

You're not reading me right - it's out of 1 account in 2 days, and is earning interest (or saving debit interest) in the recipient's account from that same day, just not available for withdrawal at that stage as technically it can still be stopped.

Google how a cheque clears - the 2-4-6 system that all the main banks signed up to some years ago.

I think that they will clear sooner with the new system of scanning cheques with your phone, but I guess cheques will gradually be phased out anyway. When they talked about doing so a few years ago, there was an outcry, and I was among the grumblers. But it wouldn't worry me now - the business has written about 5 cheques in the last 10-12 months.

I know of some farmers who wont pay their contractors/feed bills/fertilizer or whatever till they want some more. So if your a silage cintractor working for these people you wont get paid for a year
If you are the idiot waiting for the money for a year then you only have yourself to blame. The farmer takes the pee because the contractor/supplier lets him and those of us who pay up subsidise them.

A friend of mine who is a self employed marshman works from April until October looking after farmers cattle then when all the cattle have gone home sends an invoice to the various farmers for the seasons work. That is the agreed system. But tells me some farmers wait until the marsh letting auction in April to give him their cheque.:(

That's no way to run a business. Does he not have contracts with his customers?

The contract is part of the marsh letting process. When you take a marsh at the auction you pay whatever you have bid for the grazing plus agree to pay £21 per acre for the marshman who looks after the stock day to day. The system has been to same for as long as anyone can remember, probably since the marshes were drained. The man comes with the marsh if you will, if you rent that marsh then you get that man. The only power the marshman has is anyone who is trouble, poor cattle, wild bulls, half dead sheep, then he can suggest to the auctioneer that he doesn't want that farmer to bid on 'his' marshes and no doubt the auctioneer has a word. So by paying his bill on the marsh letting day then the marshman can't say he hasn't been paid!

The system works pretty well on the whole. It especially suits anyone who is farming part time as they don't have to check stock every day.

Completely agree. Not so easy when they dont answer the phone or hide when they go to take a bill over though. A mate of mine tried doing a round baling and wrapping round and he couldnt believe how some well respected farmers would act. One he could see crawling around his house on his hands and knees thinking he couldnt be seen througg the windows! A lot wouldnt answer the phone and a few drove off as he turned up in the yard looking for money. Just saw his truck turn up they would jump in theirs and drive away. Some of the things he told me were unbelievable from who everyone thought were decent people :cautious::mad:

That's a pain they don't pay by BACS, our 2 local HSBC branches have closed this year..they said Post office will take your cheque...but local Post office has a very loose mouth....so will have to travel to the bigger towns...and try to find a parking place for 10 minutes......

Is it Barclays business account that Post Office no longer taking cheques for. As Barclays website says you can pay cheques in at post office for personal accounts.

Might well be, I was just going on what the local Postmaster told me 18 months ago... I suspect he got peanuts for handling the cheques. Possibly better off to have a Post Office account and transfer funds.

Their problem really, they should give their T&C in writing before doing the work to the Client, 30 days after payment due, and not paid and the reminder letters sent, start proceedings...
