Going to need a few more ewes on the ground going forward and I couldn't afford to buy them in if I wanted too, so as I have a load of welsh brokers on the farm I'll be breeding a few replacements from them, question is do I use my lleyn or texel, pro and cons for both,
Your thoughts please!
Cheers

I used texel on some welsh brokers once an it was one of the worst experiences of my life🙈, go for something easy lambed, Charolais may be! Texel lambs were nice but the amount that get stuck lambing not worth it in my opinion! Lleyne would be easy lambed but not sure how fleshy the lambs would be at the end? I’m no expert on welsh ewes though so ....

Im doing just that...putting a lleyn tup over welsh brokers to breed myself some handy ewe lambs from a low investment...personally I think the high breeder prices are madness.

Are you running the lambs on until shearlings or lambing as hoggs? Not sure they will grow enough frame out of Welsh ewes to lamb as hoggs unless they are by a big tup?

Havnt actually tried the cross but heard good things.. happy to give it a try.. No intention of tupping them as lambs. They will go to a charollais as shearlings.

I usually use a texel on the welsh for fat lambs and have had very little problems.
I'll be using a charolais on most this year but I'll not keep females from him.
