Is that an Atkinson Borderer? I can remember as a small boy my uncle taking me for a ride in one to the top of Great Dunn fell to pick up a porta kabin, I sat on the engine bit in the middle because there was another guy in the passenger seat. I felt like a king! Happy memories. I also remember a few years later he got a 301 with the stearing second axle which I thought was awesome. Sadly my uncle is no longer with us but he was my hero as a kid.

Although I have never driven a truck so don’t wish to sound disrespectful, but the small ones of yesterday were,I should imagine, much more difficult to drive - and sheet up!

They were, but driving my old milk tanker I think I drive better. I’m looking further ahead and anticipating more, mainly in the hope of reducing the number of gear changes required!

The trouble with an old, non-baffled tanker is that a part load is prone to sloshing around a fair bit! Even just taking her for the MOT test last year caught me out a time or two.

Today’s issue, blow out M6SB.

That little bit sticking out in slow lane cost me £3k in statutory tow fee from Highways agency. £3k to go 3 miles, then get swapped to insurance co’s tow truck, which was there the whole time, but not allowed to hook on!

Bust a brake hose, no air pressure so brakes locked on, and no gear as auto.

Blow out, thrashing tyre took out brake pipe. Was overtaking in middle lane when it happened. Tried to get off but didn’t quite make it.
