I find it faster than any mechanical splitter. By the time I have got the splitter set up, I have cut a barrow full and stacked them in the log shed with a good axe. If I have a spare few minutes I just pick up the axe and away to go.
Indeed, that's fine for a few minutes at a time. I have a small electric/hydraulic splitter and reckon it's no quicker than splitting with an axe but you don't need so many breaks. Sometimes I've done a two-hour stint without stopping, couldn't do that swinging an axe.

Tried most over the years, been in the firewood job for nearly 40yrs and my latest hydraulic auto-return machine knocks spots off of anything I have used or ever seen
Its a OMA Italian machine, fastest cycle ever and glides through anything on tick over, makes an equivalent Oxdale look like a child's Toy

Have to say that the screw type looks dangerous , and many people say they are , but , are there any actual figures for accidents - life threatening or otherwise ? Curious to know .
We borrowed a home built ram type before we bought the screw type. No guarding, no oil pipe protection and single lever control.

I'll stick with a conical screw.

I am sure with common sense the screw type is safe. But for untrained and inexperienced a hydraulic ram type where both hands have to be used to operate the lever must be safer.

I would be interested to know more about your splitter and video of it working?
