Long forgotten Livestock Marts

The Ropery. Long narrow building approx 100 yards long From 1800 to 1906 was a rope / twine factory.
1922 a local rifle club used it as a range.
Not sure what date it became the Argyle Cafe but in the 50`s when I was a kid until the mart moved to Tyne Green in 1995.
At the far end was an agric merchant called Mr Brown. We used to get nails / staples & milk filter cloths there
Remember the box of milk filters was always wrapped carefully in brown paper & tied with string
Currently owned by a developer who also has the adjacent old bus station site.
Development is on hold due to planning / finance issues
Yea the fish and chips were good, the other cafe was over the road which had better facilities. Rickerbys was up there too they ran 2 places the other one is a garage for fancy cars now. The mart one sold stuff for implements and hardware the bottom one mainly tractor stuff. Seem to remember a couple of rings at the mart a main ring and a calf ring

Remember the top/main ring being red .
If you mean the car garage by the roundabout it’s now a gym

Above the Argyle Cafe was the fat cow / dairy ring. Further up the bank was the store cattle & sheep rings.

To the east was the calf ring

Above now s/market / car park

Further east was the black mart Origionaly run by - I think Tynedale auction mart co. Had a dairy sale / store cattle & were big in importing Irish cattle through Silloth

Hexham mart bought that in 70`s Now the hospital

Is there any reference list say from 50’s, bit like what farmers weekly do with prices. Would be interesting to see as almost every town in the country would have a livestock market

I remember those big suckler sales at the old mart. If I remember rightly one of the old drovers was called Pat.
