pheasant population has dropped alot around here in south essex to what it was last year ? thats not just in my fields but even driving around, i just dont see them, reasons please?

Less released birds on local shoots. You see the most in spring during the mating season when they are too interested in each other to be watching the cars coming towards them.

this week while out in the fields saw a flock of hundreds of small birds on my spring barley stubble
when they find my chickory plots grown for shoot game cover the flocks are in the thousands
this year have stewardship wild bird mix and game plot chickory so will have a comparison which crop has most birds

without shooting the chickory plots would not be grown .these plots also get game feed till the end of april or longer if it is a late spring
all paid for by the shooting enthusiasts

Cycles?
Natural and man made cycles are what I think I have witnesses up to now in my life time.

DDT reducing bird of prey numbers, massive oilseed rape and maize area increases and the difference in air quality, no acid rain is having an amazing effect on tree growth.
OSR slugs and woodpigeon? Maize and badgers? Clean air ivy and scrub?

Man made changes but the natural cycles continue, prey species increase, then predator species increase. Prey species crash closely followed by their predators and the cycle starts all over again.
The annual numbers counted of any bird or animal will depend on what point in the cycle we are at and will vary massively. Numbers are meaningless unless you have some understanding of the natural cycles.
