Anyone else experiencing high loss of electronic tags in cattle?

Out of the last 250 cattle 40 have had the e-tag, the calves have lost 7 in one summer.

Of the previous 210 only 2 losses. Same cattle, same bloke doing the tagging (me) in the same way.

Yes , there seems more room between the two halfs which causes them to catch on things. I am going to put the tag further up in the ear to see if that helps with this years calves

We appear to be having an issue with a batch of conventional flag tags. The replacements have a longer stalk between the two halves!
Someone is wrong!!!

The standard Shearwell tags are very good but the cattle EIDs are poorer. When we weigh the cattle every month we replace around 2-5% as they have either come out or are not reading, very annoying!

Yes gave up with them @Pan mixer i think they’re too heavy. Do you find the holes get larger, and track through between the veins?
We have some split ears, most just seeme to have come out somehow leaving a slightly bigger hole, both halves are still joined in the two pairs that I have found this week on the fields.

I thought that they were going to be compulsory?

Well that’s my argument against it, but the ones in power don’t seem to see the problem. We had it about 6 years ago, I was told by the manufacturer that they were too heavy for the calves. Ours just ended up with a rip in the ear, but it was more like a large v than just a straight rip from a stuck tag in a gate if you see what I mean
