does it not know what to use as a start-up disc?

Installing OS on a mac is not as straight forward as it is windows - you need to make a USB startup stick etc - google will be your friend here but I recall when I did mine last at one point I thought I had bricked the machine forever!

that doesn't sound great

I think you will have to make a boot usb and start over?

Apple help are VERY good - I had a problem with a mac that was 2 years out warranty a few years ago and they spent ages on the phone helping get it sorted when it turned out it was a problem with the SSD they replaced FOC despite the lack of warranty

When you pay the Mac premium this is what your paying for IMO

My Mac hasn't died (sorry OP, but I do sympathise) but it has been very near death several times. I think it knows I hate it and acts accordingly to annoy me. I have a 14lb hammer in the shed. One day, one day....

Macs are like Briggs & Stratton engines. They keep bringing out a new model in the hope that they'll eventually get one that works.
