Thinking of getting one

Any recommendations ?

I recall seeing one set up as a workshop pillar drill ? Is this a DIY thing or can you buy a pillar mount kit for them ?

If you can stretch to it then get a variable speed one, as mine is fixed - if you put a large cutter in there it spins too fast and burns it out.

I made a pillar drill mount, used a bench mounted pillar drill, cut the top bit off and welded on a lump of channel, job done. Trying to work out how to put some pics up!

Pics would be great - just click "upload file" under the post box and navigate to the picture on your pc - then choose thumbnail or full size - pretty simple really no need to resize etc thats all done automatically for you here

Do you know I was looking so hard for the 'paperclip' attachment button I got used to I completely missed it underneath the box!

Evolution for cheap but effective.

The best one i have seen had vari speed, so could be used for tapping , also the drill could be moved independantly from the rack drive,
difficult to explain but very useful for some applications, most wont go far enough past the base plate,
also look for one with morse taper. might have been a Fein?
dont use with out safety chain, powercuts always happen when drill is hanging upside down

I got mine from magdrill.com

Very good service, bought the full works, vari-speed, standard 13mm chuck included, set of cutters and everything for about £750 if I recall. It's a Rotabroach.

I made a stand from some H iron and a heavy plate. I put pics on the old forum, but have deleted them now I'm afraid.

Had a look today. Same as DrDunc spec wise, except I bought 2 sets of all the common cutters, a full set of other cutters up to 50mm, which they would only sell me because I said I would be the only one to use it! Usually it is a 42mm machine. I also bought a full set of twist drills from 1mm to 13mm.

@spanners that video is so wrong on SO many levels. I'm just in from lambing, it cheered me up no end to see someone who's an even bigger muppet than myself:)

make sure you chain it to something for some reason my mag drill came unstuck and span round hitting my hand and smashing my hand up still got massive bit bone on side of hand were it hit and broke it.
