Maggots on sheep, stuff that kills them.

Clik only prevents strike, will l have to buy a 5 litres of ecofly or similar to spray on them to kill them, had ewe there with some around the tail, just rubbed them of with clippers but only have clik about the place, like to see them dead. Nothing else l suppose.

If you've clipped her out (bare) over the struck area then that should really be enough - maggots don't bury deep into the skin this time of year and are only on the surface... Washing the shorn area with clean water would help.

A bottle of Crovect/Ectofly/Vectocert is always good to have to kill maggots on anything badly struck and will give protection to repeat strike

Jeyes fluid used to kill maggots but unsure if it still does (the good ingredients were banned years ago now!)

In very desperate time - and I stress only as a last resort if you have absolutely nothing else to treat/kill maggots and can not get/source anything quickly.... diesel will do the job.

+1 if it’s shorn bare that should be enough ime.

As for the diesel, I can’t see how it could be any worse for the sheep than pouring Jeyes Fluid on an open wound!

It isn't. Infact I'd say it's kinder (I've had diesel on my skin and in wounds and it isn't an issue, Jeyes fluid on the other hand 😖)... but it is highly frowned upon and I'd imagine someone somewhere would want to lock you up for it

However - as an emergency, in the face of animal welfare, if you find yourself in a position without the 'approved' products (say late on a Sunday, where nowhere is open til the morning)... it is better than leaving the sheep/lamb to be eaten to death

Plus one for shorn. If you have some water in the back of the truck, it's worth rinsing the affected area to get rid of the acid which the maggots secrete to dissolve the skin.

And watch out for the area being the first to attract flies even before the wool has grown back.

I always think crovect is severe stuff to pour onto a sheep that’s struck if it looks sore
There used to be maggot oil available but doesn’t bring them out as well

Put iodine in your own open wounds before you next put it on an animals...

i use iodine....but i concur with nithsy....even on unbroken skin.....BUT i reckon it's still safer and better than a 'nerve poison' that crovect etc effectively is

We have a knapsack with dip in, spray any with dirty tails as they go through the squeeze, any struck we clip them out. Ours are through the pens once a fortnight at the moment for sorting, spraying them usually keeps the maggots off them.
I wouldn’t use crovect, it can kill the sheep if they have open wounds.
Christ that sounds like you don’t want to live to a good age.

We have a spray bottle of lincospectin in water with a splash of iodine and a splash of crovect ( don't ask exact amount cos I don't know but maybe 10% ). If you find maggots in a foot they're out straight away, shearing cuts and flystrike patches.

On Thursday 26th September, we’re holding a webinar for farmers to go through the guidance, actions and detail for the expanded Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) offer. This was planned for end of May, but had to be delayed due to the general election. We apologise about that.

Farming and Countryside Programme Director, Janet Hughes will be joined by policy leads working on SFI, and colleagues from the Rural Payment Agency and Catchment Sensitive Farming.

This webinar will be...
