Mains electric fence energizer problem

I have a Rutland (model ESM4400) mains electric fence unit about 10 year old, never missed a beat till now although it is switched off in the winter months. Working perfect this spring until the other day when I noticed the fence was dead. The power light is showing on the box but none of the other lights which show the charge being produced are. When working properly one light flashes every few seconds to correspond with the charge being released down the fence and the box also makes a clicking noise. Now there is neither a flashing light or sound.I have checked the fence for earths and have even disconnected a large section out onto the hill to no avail.Any ideas? TIA.

Had the smaller ESM 3300 with, what sounds the same problem, was diagnosed by local repair chap as fault on the circuit board which are no longer available. If the fault could be diagnosed down to component level it could be rectified, or perhaps spares from ebay ? Mine's still sat at the back of the workshop.:(
I didn't try Rutlands as a previous replacement transformer had cost the same as the fencer new.
Most fencer repairers aren't happy about working on mains powered models.

I repair them, can usually repair for £46 inc return p&p the esm4400 is a good unit well worth repairing as it's the old type energiser that kicks out full power all the time. New units now have to comply with EU regs that limits the power unless heavy load is detected and then ramp up output power.

I don't know if you still follow the thread P500, but Im hoping you could give me a clue with a unit that has packed up. It has a component that I can't identify, wired from the board, near the switch and incoming power, and it test open circuit.

Hi do you still repair energisers, I have a Rutland ESM402 mains Energiser used for my horses. It was working perfectly fine knocking out very high voltage for years now has no life to it.
Thanks Gillyb

His last post was Dec 2020, the one before that was June 2019, so he's hardly a regular on here.

If you don't get any joy try........

Try Googling the make and model of your energiser. I did and found a Youtube video of the exact same unit. Followed that and found a dud resistor (as on the video) costing a few pence. Now knocking out 7,000v as before. BUT do watch those capacitors as a shock from one of them could kill you!

i was doing something in a old fencer 1 day trying to get it working when i touched the capacitors :banghead: my chest felt odd for a couple of hours after

You need to discharge the capacitor before fiddling around too much. I think you just short it out with a (well insulated) screwdriver, but I'd check that before doing it.
