You plant when the conditions are right surely? Same as any other crop. For maize that will be later than most other crops.
Planted peas and barley here 2 weeks ago, when the soil and weather conditions were right.

Still got two thirds of my acreage to plant here. It's a late season and a lot of ground is wet underneath.
Contractors started planting two weeks later than normal, so just have to work with them and be patient.

None planted here, ploughed ground still drying at weekend. Raining now and tomorrow looks wet. Weekend drilling at the earliest.

Bearing in mind the late ish drilling, anybody think there is some mileage in reducing seedrates from 45000 to 42500 seeds an acre? We sell the crop by weight so don't want to miss out on crop bulk.

Also being a cheapskate could I get by replacing the down the spout DAP with say urea to give the crop a kick start? Soils all Index 2 plus for P and sludge cake has been ploughed down. DAP and final seed not yet on farm, so potential for input savings or 'penny wise pound foolish'. Thoughts please?

Very wet tonight Will. Contractors nipped in here on Sunday morning, and got 35 acres done , before going back to the farm they were rained off at. I've worked another 14 acres that'll need another pass. Hope it doesn't turn into a pudding . I've used 25-5-15 as a starter fert before, which would be fine with good indices, and cheaper than DAP .

Plenty wet enough here as well, when to get some filters from Edwards and Farmer this afternoon, a lot seems to have been drilled around Shrewsbury but round here very little seem to have been drilled.

Most of the fields immediately around me, have been drilled. Must've been four different contractors working nearby last week. But, as you know, it's boys land down here in the village, the problems start on the heavier land at the top end of the farm.
