Maize seed price and variety

Hi folks, just wondering how much I should be paying for maize seed and which variety would you recommend for Anglesey, North Wales. I’ve seen prices from £40 acre to £80 at 45,000 seeds/acre.

Drilling at 42,000 is a bit of a myth I dont see it makes any real difference- its about 1 seed per square meter less... make what you will of that....

Sow at 45,000 and choose an early variety and one with high vigour scores. Also consider eyespot tolerance scores. You will want a maturity rating of at least 8 probably more like a 10 I would think.

Ok so what about sprays. Planning on glypho pre-cultivation then stomp aqua pre-emergence. If I do get some couch and wild oats coming through is Maister WG the way to go or would there be anything else that would take these out?

Maister or nicosulfuron will kill the wild oats easy. Neither of them are that hot on couch- supression of shoots is quoted. Which one I would use depends on the broad leaved weeds present. You dont need to use posh stomp aqua you can use cheap PDM with equal efficacy. Make sure the seedbed is half sensible. A bit of drizzle helps- ive seen it applied in the rain. It works fine.
