NFU sugar are reporting this morning that a large sugar beet contractor and haulier has gone into administration. Not good considering how early we are into the campaign with a record amount of beet grown.
Can anyone shead any light on this?

This is not good, bloody good efficient contractor if it's who I think it is. We are working with 1980s prices and knock on effects and all that.

You need big machines to get the output, but they cost inproportional to the prices for farm produce and therefore cost of contracting is below where it needs to be.

when i started farming 1 1/4 tons of beet paid the contractor .....how many tonnes is it now?

The statement read out by NFU Sugar chairman Michael Sly at today's NFU Council meeting at Stoneleigh, Warwickshire, was as follows:

NFU Sugar is saddened and disappointed to learn that a significant contractor – a pioneer in self-grown and the industry harvesting and haulage scheme – has gone into technical administration.

The business is highly regarded by growers for its professionalism and the service it has offered – and it is therefore unfortunate that a commercial solution has not been found to date.

There is a possibility that this may impact on the current campaign.

Any grower who may be affected should contact the NFU Sugar helpline on 03700 661 974.

How can we know if we are affected if they don’t name them?

Too many 5? Ish off the top of head.

the latter part of my beet growing career i could get 3 row tanker + trailer for £65/ac.....now it's all 6 row tankers and £110/ac:scratchhead:

i wonder what the depreciation/ac is?.....i mean £450k for a harvester....if it does 2500ac/year for ten years (if you're lucky?) then scrap...thats £18/ac?...before you start anything else

i wonder if bs will eventually regret pushing out us little boys with our zero depreciation standens/armers/ tims ?

It's partly B.S. fault with the introduction of there harvest and haulage scheme.

Our haulier packed up this year because of the way the price had been cut by B.S. and I've heard that around here the harvast and haulage scheme is about £65 acre for lifting when other contractors are £85+, its good for grower but a bloody nightmare for the contractors.

For us I still think the way to go is to lift our own with our old zero depreciated tim which gets us our beet lifted every year for under £500 plus diesel.

Some people I know who had the beet harvested and hauled by BS wouldn't let them carry on as the harvesting was carried out so poorly.

No no no. Big SP sprayers can run 365 days a year as they have 'contractor' nozzles....

ah ...i've seen them....'auto dry nozzles' for spraying in the rain and 'farm assurance nozzles' for when it's windy:D:D:D

seriously though this new generation of kit needs to 1000s ac because once it's wore up it's scrap.....trouble is the more it does/yr the quicker it's scrap....which kinda begs the question 'can it do enough acres in its lifetime to pay for itself?'

op mentions 'record beet area':scratchhead:.....doesn't seem like it round here:scratchhead:

Thats gotta be pretty much the most vague news press release ever!
How the heck are farmers supposed to make alternative arrangements if they dont even know their own situation?

I think NFU Sugar have been made aware of the situation (yesterday) and at the NFU council meeting today they just wanted to let growers know that if they have been affected and are worried they can get in touch with NFU Sugar to try and work out what will happen.

The company in question deserve the right to tell their customers first and as the situation is still on going, and the exact outcome direction is unknown at this point.

There are factory forum meetings this and next week at which NFU Sugar will be there so hopefully the question will be asked.
