have been growing concerto for a few years now and never had any real issues ect ! Thinking there are higher yielding variety’s now so was kind of thinking about trying some laureate . But today was told it does brackle which can be an issue on our more exposed fields . Just wondered how it compares to concerto . Another one I have been looking at is sienna . Just wondered how others were getting on with these variety’s after growing concerto .
Would also be keen to know how they compare on the skinning front compared to concerto .

Evening!

Had some laureate last year which went flat and ended up in the feed pile. Was after veg but only 50 units N, did hold back on the growth reg due to the dry spring which was a mistake with hindsight.

Chronicle after potatoes all stayed up with 105 units N and no growth reg.

Chronicle and momentum this year.

Sassy meant to be good new variety also.

We are putting in about 1/3rd laureate this year. A lot of people are moving

how does laureate compare for brackling ? We used to grow optic and it was terrible for brackling ! Never had any real issues with concerto .

Well ours got caught out after weather broke and it was worse than concerto. Just a knot. There are pictures of it on here somewhere. They were on old phone.

The weather was extreme last year. So going to try some more this year. Neighbours had good yields with it and growing more. I'm being cautious.

Grew 100% laureate on 200 acres last year.
Big step on from Concerto in terms of yield. Averaged out at 2.94t/acre when adjusted to 15% moisture.

Only had two fields that brackled(25 acres) Both got a good coating of dung the year before when they went into WW which I think must have had something to do with it.

All made malting but one of the brackled fields was a 1.74N which got a £20 deduction on it and would have been consigned to the feed pile in a year when the maltsters had more to choose from.
Was good for skinning , nothing over 5%.

Yeh think yields have moved on a bit for the newer variety’s . The experts haven’t really got to the bottom of skinning yet . I find keeping on top of ripening with the combine maybe helps reduce the risk which is easier said than done with the previous harvest we have had .

Grew chronicle, concerto and laureate last year, didn't find laureate any worse for brackling than concerto, dropping chronicle this yr as limited market, our laureate did very well at 3.5t/ac dried to 14.5%but grew it in our long term best yielding field so not giving a true reflection, still think it should manage .25t/ac over concerto though.

I haven't heard of any malting boats being Laureate. Propino and Planet are accepted in the European malting market so I would stick with them.

Planet is a malting variety for brewing only. It's not as popular as Propino but it's yield makes a slightly lower price worth it. Planet had a bad year down here in 2017, losing its germination much quicker in the wet harvest than Propino but is less sensitive to N dose.
