Manitou MLT731 starter motor replacement

Ive just replaced one on our 741 14 plate. Wheels full lock and there was a little inspection late in by the wheel relatively close to the starter. Managed to undo 1 bolt through this plate and the other 2 from the top of the engine. A pig of a job but it was doable

Thanks del_boy, mine’s an 08 reg and sounds as though it’s a different set up. My starter is at the back middle, in between the engine and the radiator. Any inspection plate seems to be further than arms length away

Perkins common rail engine? IMO its a bit of a bugger! take all the front cowling off the radiator, take the fuel filter off the side of the engine then you should be able to get at it with sockets.

Its also the more expensive perkins one, its a 4.2kw but the common 4.2kw iskra does not fit for 2 reasons, the nose on the front of the starter is at a different angle on the cheaper common one, this is problem cause the nose fits through the flywheel cover plate. 2nd is the cheaper one does not have the stud on motor body to bolt the earths to and everything is very tight for space in that area so its just too much hassle trying to fit the cheaper option.

If you got a non common rail engine then it will just have the 3.2kw starter, same sort of thing taking the rad cowling off etc but its much easier.

Can sort you a starter out tomorrow if you want?

Not sure, sticker says RG81374?

I’ve taken the radiator out now so I’d probably prefer it if nobody comes along to say there’s an easier way!

oh sorry too late:ROFLMAO: While its out give it a through clean and back flush, check your top and bottom rad hoses internally for cracking.
Check your fan bearings and tensioner/idler bearings cause that's all nice and easy to get at.

but more importantly look at the engine mounting bracket bolts to the bell housing, they come loose and drop the engine down messing up the drive shaft alinement. make sure them bolts are TIGHT or if bracket dropped then reposition it first.

Edit as well as dropping the engine down the bracket bends the tin cover on the flywheel and pinches it against the flywheel, this makes the engine appear seized up and wont turn on starter if bad enough:ROFLMAO:

A lot of useful information there, thanks! The starter p/n is 2873k634 if that means anything?
Unfortunately I really need the machine to be working at 8am on Tuesday so I shall have to fit whatever starter motor I can find locally tomorrow and hope that doesn’t mean I have to do this all again anytime soon.

that's a 3.2kw I think from memory. delivery would be Tuesday before 12am as standard best I could offer. bit of a drive for you to collect one tomorrow but you can if you wish.(y)
